Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after the French winger found the scoring early on.

However, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to seize a shock advantage. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the final moments to send the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
