Minister Confirms MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Told to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been told to refrain from talking about classified matters in all vehicles.

Security Guidance for MoD Personnel

During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but noted that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The broader security environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of government activities, from vehicle use to communication habits.
