Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
