Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become starving," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
