A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
